Further critical issues in the Avellino prison are reported by the regional secretary of Sappe, Tiziana Guacci.

A South African prisoner, transferred to Avellino from the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, set fire to the sheets in his cell, causing a dense cloud of toxic fumes to spread throughout the entire section.

The same inmate attacked two officers who rushed to put out the fire and damaged the fire extinguisher they were using. The incident occurred the day after Lucia Castellano, the Campania prison superintendent, visited the Avellino prison.

The union denounces "the ineffective management of the prison and the dysfunctions in the use of already understaffed staff."
