The mayor of Caserta, Charles Marine, reacted with firmness and indignation to the news of the imminent appointment of an access commission to the Municipality of Caserta, following the investigation into contracts, bribes and vote-trading that led to the elimination of the Council. Describing the situation as a “clockwork” and a “a very serious act that aims to sabotage the regular course of the democratic life of the city”, Marino chose social media to express his position.
Marino, a member of the Democratic Party and not under investigation, pointed the finger at Giampiero Zinzi, a member of parliament for the League and from Caserta, accusing him of trying to bring down the government with underhanded means. “Not with a just political battle but with the infamy of a brand” linked to the Camorra, the mayor declared, stressing that he will not remain silent in front of “this operation of inversion of the truth and destruction of the reputation of a healthy administration and of an entire city”.
Marino promised that, in the event of the appointment of the commission, the municipal administration will immediately make available all administrative documents to demonstrate full transparency and absolute distance from criminogenic systems. According to the mayor, the action of the access commission is a direct consequence of the pressure from Zinzi, who, he stressed Marine, had close political ties with two former councilors investigated in the inquiry.
The mayor also highlighted the suspicious timing of this action, which occurred just when he and the city had begun a battle against differentiated autonomy, a theme that saw Zinzi as a protagonist in Parliament with his vote against the South and the Caserta area. “If this news is true, this member of the League must resign immediately”, Marino declared, accusing Zinzi of attacking the city to make people forget his vote and his work in favor of differentiated autonomy.
