He pretended to be a Carabiniere and defrauded an elderly woman of over €20. This morning, officers from the Castel Volturno station (Caserta) executed the precautionary house arrest order, issued by the Court of Oristano, against a 32-year-old man from Caserta, already known to law enforcement, who is being held responsible for aggravated fraud and conspiracy to use a credit card.
The investigation began following a complaint filed by the elderly victim on May 9th. According to the investigation, the man, introducing himself over the phone as a Carabinieri marshal, defrauded her into handing over cash, gold jewelry, and her ATM card with its PIN.
The man told her that his daughter had just hit a pedestrian and that, to avoid unpleasant criminal consequences, he needed to immediately compensate the injured person's family. He informed her that a lawyer friend of his would be coming by shortly to collect the money. Thus, with the help of an accomplice, already identified and subject to a precautionary measure, the 32-year-old managed to fraudulently pocket over €20. In this case, however, the 84-year-old, after contacting his daughter, who confirmed that she had not been involved in any accident, discovered the scam and reported the incident to the Carabinieri.
