A thirty-one year old was arrested in Castel Volturno, in the province of Caserta, accused of defrauding an elderly woman living in Oristano.
The operation, conducted by the Carabinieri of Oristano and Mondragone, allowed them to uncover a particularly insidious scam.
It all started with a phone call: two individuals pretended to be a lawyer and a Carabinieri marshal, telling the victim that her daughter had been involved in a car accident and was at risk of arrest.
To avoid more serious consequences, they asked her to hand over a sum of money equal to 35.000 euros. To make the story even more credible, the scammers made the woman listen to an audio recording in which a female voice, simulating that of her daughter, begged for help.
Frightened and worried about her daughter's fate, the old woman gathered all her savings and valuables, then personally handed them over to a man who showed up at her house, pretending to be her lawyer.
Not only that: the victim also handed over his credit card with the PIN and his mobile phone.
Only later, after finally contacting her daughter and discovering the deception, did the elderly woman realize she had been the victim of a scam and filed a complaint.
Thanks to the Carabinieri's investigations, it was possible to trace the identity of the thirty-one-year-old, who was arrested in Campania.
