An incredible cyber scam. A woman from Caserta discovered it the hard way. When she took her cell phone in for repair, she was scammed out of €87.
Cybercriminals, taking advantage of her good faith, managed to steal her digital identity and empty her bank account.
How did the scam happen?
It seems incredible, but it all happened in the space of a few weeks. The managers of an electronics repair shop, once in possession of the cell phone, exploited a vulnerability in the system to access the woman's personal data.
With this information, they were able to make bank transfers and online purchases without her knowledge. The stolen money was used to buy a luxurious BMW X6 and other expensive purchases.
The Naples Prosecutor's Office is investigating
The defrauded woman filed a complaint, and the Naples Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation. Four people are under investigation for cyber fraud , unauthorized access to a computer system and receiving stolen goods.
