A random check carried out on the video surveillance system has allowed us to discover the theft of the offerings in the Basilica of Santa Restituta, in the central square of the municipality of Lacco Ameno.
Parish priest Don Pasquale Mattera, reviewing the security camera footage from the church, named after the island's patron saint and where her relics are kept, noticed the man (evidently unaware he was being filmed) approach the candlestick at the foot of the saint's statue, force open the collection drawer, and steal the coins contained therein.
The incident occurred in broad daylight in a busy square just meters from some of the island's most renowned hotels. Upon discovering the incident, the parish priest filed a complaint with the island's State Police, which is currently investigating to identify the thief.
