This summer has been marked by a persistent heat wave like never before. Yet some still believe that perhaps animals are immune to the suffering caused by physical exertion when the thermometer soars.
In fact, despite the record heat in Naples Horse-drawn carriages continue to circulate for sightseeing tours even during the hottest hours of the day.
Last Friday, August 16, a citizen documented yet another scene of exploitation.
“Naples, August 16, 13:30 p.m. The horse was pulling two tourists from Mergellina to Molo Beverello” - explains the woman who spoke to the Green-Left alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli - “Under the scorching sun this horse, which was clearly not well and showed signs of mistreatment, was forced to pull a carriage for the entertainment of the tourists.
Stop mistreating these poor defenseless souls! Stop. It’s a disgrace. We are an uncivilized country.”
“In the Municipality of Naples there is an ordinance that prohibits the use of horses to pull cars from June 1st to September 15th during the hottest hours of the day, that is, from 13 to 16 pm. If temperatures reach or exceed 35 degrees then traction is completely prohibited.
But this ban is almost never applied. We had already, at the beginning of the summer, asked the mayor of Naples to restore compliance with the municipal ordinance. The institutions cannot allow continuous mistreatment of horses, under the incredulous eyes of citizens and tourists.
It is necessary to remember two episodes: on February 25, 2021, in via Sartania, the road that connects Agnano with the Pianura neighborhood, a horse collapsed to the ground after being towed for several kilometers on an uphill road; on August 12, 2020, at the Royal Palace of Caserta, one of the horses used to transport the carriages that carried visitors around collapsed to the ground, aided by the heat that increased the animal's tiredness.
More controls are needed, but above all new laws to protect the rights of animals and stop the slaughter by severely punishing dishonest drivers. In this specific case we have filed a complaint with the ASL Veterinaria so that the health conditions of the animal can be verified.”- declared Borrelli.
