Naples. Moments of tension in the afternoon in the Avellino Ward of the Poggioreale prison where an inmate started a fire in protest.
The fire was started in response to health-related issues within the facility.
The fire caused extensive damage, including several cases of poisoning due to smoke inhalation from burning mattresses. The situation required immediate intervention to ensure the safety of the inmates.
Despite the emergency, the Penitentiary Police Department promptly responded to the scene, reducing the risk of further damage and complications.
The firefighters, alerted immediately after the fire broke out, did not have to intervene actively once they arrived on site thanks to the timely assessment of the situation by security personnel.

According to CON.SI.PE. Vice President Luigi Castaldo, today, due to organizational dysfunctions and criticalities, certainly not attributable to the Penitentiary Police Force, the slightest pretext was enough to spark a riot. Only thanks to the high professionalism of the few prison officers present, was the worst avoided.
Sometimes, if poorly managed, these riots can lead to the inmates suffocating from intoxication. However, today, thanks to the use of gas masks, the inmates involved in the walks were moved and the worst was avoided, with no injuries.
For the trade unionist Castaldo, the penitentiary system is collapsing and a courageous investment by the Government is urgently needed, both from a human and structural perspective, therefore we at CON.SI.PE. will demonstrate on 12 September 2024 in front of the Prap of various regions so that solutions are found to this state of abandonment and our prisons are more humanized.
