### The Night of the Tammorra: A Celebration of Music and Folk Culture in Southern Italy
Southern Italy's folk culture finds one of its most vibrant expressions in the Notte della Tammorra, an event celebrating traditional Campanian music, dance, and song. Organized by the Santa Chiara Orchestra and funded by the City of Naples as part of the "Naples City of Music" project, this year's edition, titled "Metropolis Folk," marks the 22nd anniversary of a festival that blends tradition and modernity. Piazza Mercato will be the setting for this celebration, which will take place on September 6th and 7th.
### A Meeting of Generations and Traditions
Sergio Locoratolo, coordinator of cultural policies for the City of Naples, highlighted the importance of Piazza Mercato as the city's vital center. This historic site not only preserves Naples' musical traditions, but also looks to the future. The Notte della Tammorra serves as a bridge between different generations of artists and spectators, using music and culture as tools for the growth of the local community.
### Amazing Artists and Performances
The opening night will feature groups such as Ars Nova, Bagarjia Orkestar and the Ensemble Notte della Tammorra, along with the vocal quartet Paese Mio Bello, Monica Sarnelli and Antonio Onorato. Saturday will be Enzo Avitabile's debut at the festival. Carlo Faiello, artistic director, explains that the focus of this edition is the transformation of music and folk singing from the rural to the metropolitan context, explored through performances that blend past and present.
### Homages and Contemporary Sounds
Ferdinando Tozzi, the Mayor's delegate for the music and audiovisual industry, emphasizes the goal of enhancing Naples' musical tradition, reinterpreting it in light of contemporary sounds. The festival is not limited to a performance event, but also a space for cultural exploration and dialogue, enriched by workshops, conferences, and performances. Among the planned tributes will be homages to great figures such as Raffaele Viviani, as well as reinterpretations of popular songs.
### A Week of Events and Workshops
This year, La Notte della Tammorra will feature a week of events starting on September 2nd. Free folk dance workshops will be held in the Church of Santa Croce e Purgatorio al Mercato, followed by a conference on the theme of "Metropolis Folk" on September 5th. The festival aims to create a vibrant synergy between past and present, exploring new forms of musical and artistic expression through a series of workshops and cultural activities.
### The Magic of the Night of Tammorra
Conceived by composer and musicologist Carlo Faiello, the Notte della Tammorra was born with the aim of rediscovering and promoting traditional Campanian music, dance, and songs. Originating from the historic festival 'a Notte de' Tammorre', the event combines dance, ritual, folk customs, and entertainment. The combination of professional musicians and performers of folk tradition creates a unique performance, confirming the festival as one of the main expressions of Naples' cultural identity, capable of growing and evolving without forgetting its roots.
