Memorandum of understanding between the MPA and the Municipality of Massa Lubrense. Four local officers will also be deployed at sea to monitor compliance with environmental protection regulations. Yesterday, four fines were issued for anchoring in Crapolla.
From yesterday until September 30, four officers of the Massa Lubrense Municipal Police will contribute to controlling the sea and compliance with the Regulations of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area.
The agreement between the Municipality of Massa Lubrense and the Punta Campanella MPA was stipulated within the framework of the European project Life Sea Net which aims to improve the protection and knowledge of the Natura 2000 site “Seabeds of Punta Campanella and Capri”.
The controls are aimed at protecting marine Natura 2000 sites, the same reason why the buoy fields were installed. The main objective is to discourage wild anchoring in areas with valuable habitats.
The officers - who will carry out this activity with overtime paid by the MPA so as not to reduce their service to the Municipality - have the power to impose sanctions, therefore they can issue fines against those who violate the Park regulations and cause damage to the marine environment.
On the first day of service, 4 fines were issued for prohibited anchoring in zone B in Crapolla.
"Naturally, we in no way want to replace the maritime authority, which is providing its maximum contribution within the limits of its available manpower and resources," underlines the Director of the Punta Campanella MPA, Lucio De Maio . "The action implemented by the MPA, with the support of the Massa Lubrense municipal police command, is aimed exclusively at environmental protection."
"We have a duty to enforce the bans; everyone is expected to behave in a civil and respectful manner," observes Lucio Cacace, President of the Punta Campanella Marine Reserve. " Too often, in recent times, the finger has been pointed at certain groups while others have gone unpunished. The police checks will help us face the final part of this season with greater order."
