A 46-year-old and a 31-year-old, both with criminal records, were arrested by the Highway Police in Salerno They were held responsible for a scam involving an elderly woman in Villarosa, in the province of Enna. The two were tracked down and stopped on the A2 highway while returning to the Naples area. The investigation began following a complaint filed by the elderly woman with the Carabinieri at the Villarosa station.
The woman said she was the victim of a scam involving a fake car accident involving her son, who had been involved in a car accident that resulted in the injury of a pregnant woman, and was facing imminent arrest by the police. The two scammers convinced the elderly woman to hand over €600 and various valuables to avoid her son's arrest.
The Carabinieri identified the vehicle allegedly used by the scammers, which turned out to be a rental vehicle, initiating an extensive search, involving the Lamezia Terme and Sala Consilina highway operations centers, as well as traffic police patrols on the A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo motorway. Monitoring allowed the Sala Consilina traffic police to locate the vehicle near the Padula-Buonabitacolo A2 junction.
EE, 46, and LR, 31, both with criminal records, were identified in the car and subjected to a personal search. The officers found a large amount of cash and various jewelry. The two were reported at large to the Lagonegro Prosecutor's Office.
