A chase ensued on the A1, with patrols slowing traffic to a crawl to isolate the fleeing car, which then sped off onto the junction and rammed a highway patrol car that was crossing the road to block its path.
It happened between the toll booths of Caianello and San Vittore del Lazio, where a Smart stolen from Rome a few days ago made its getaway. Intercepted outside the A1 motorway, the car sped onto the highway to avoid capture, embarking on a long, zigzagging race, engaging in dangerous maneuvers between vehicles.

A patrol car from the Cassino sub-section slowed the cars like a Formula 1 "Safety Car," isolating the Smart and thus preventing it from causing an accident. The patrol car from the Caserta Nord sub-section took over pursuit. Seeing themselves pursued, the two drivers sped toward the San Vittore toll booth, where one of the Cassino patrol cars was waiting.
They rammed the car but were defeated and stopped. The driver was arrested for resisting arrest, damaging property, and receiving stolen goods. He is now in prison in Cassino. The passenger was charged with resisting arrest and assault.
