Tourism in Campania continues to record extraordinary successes but the Cilento can't keep up.
The area south of the province of Salerno is experiencing a severe decline in tourism, especially among foreign visitors. According to ISTAT data, in 2014, Cilento welcomed approximately 600 foreign tourists.
Today, eight years later, attendance has plummeted to 186, a 67,6% decline. 2023 also shows no signs of recovery, and according to initial data and projections from local operators, 2024 will close with a further decline.
For Marco Sansiviero, president of Cilento Autentico DMO, "good intentions and the goals to be achieved necessarily involve the creation of a new, unified and sustainable tourism governance model for our region. In this sense, the efforts made in recent months by Cilento tourism operators are moving precisely in this direction."
For Sansiviero, "Cilento has the potential to return to being a top-tier tourist destination, but this requires a collective effort. It is essential that municipalities, entrepreneurs, and regional institutions collaborate to develop a strategic plan that promotes our unique heritage."
"We are ready," adds the president of Cilento Autentico DMO, "to do our part and work to build a prosperous future, attracting tourists from all over the world, all year round. With the right support and a shared vision, we can realize the dream of a Cilento that not only resists, but thrives, becoming a model of sustainable tourism on an international level."
