Serious disturbances occurred in the prison of Ariano Irpino, in the province of Avellino. Several inmates gave rise to violent protests, clashing with the Penitentiary Police officers.
Yesterday two ex art.32 psychiatric prisoners punched a prison policeman in the Ariano Irpino prison who was forced to undergo medical treatment.
The two inmates' unheard-of violence not only attacked the prison policeman on duty but also destroyed two sleeping rooms.
For the regional secretary CON.SI.PE Campania Thomas De Lia "today the violence in prisons Bells is the order of the day, the result of a collapsing penitentiary system that is showing all its flaws to the detriment of a growing precariousness of everyone's safety".

For the national delegate of the Penitentiary Police managers CON.SI.PE Vincenzo Santoriello "What happened in the Ariano prison is emblematic of the reality that the Penitentiary Police staff are experiencing on site: a skeleton staff, a lack of security, a reality that worries everyone, yet no one is doing anything to improve the working conditions of hundreds of state servants seduced and abandoned to their own devices, like the prison officer on duty who was attacked."
For the vice president CON.SI.PE Louis Castaldo "Psychiatric inmates not only endanger the safety of prison police personnel but also destabilize order and security within prison wards. For some time now, as a trade union confederation, we have been calling on the government to take decisive and concrete action in the management of these individuals, who should be treated and placed in appropriate facilities, but not in prisons.
Therefore, on September 12th we will be in front of the Campania PRAP to demonstrate against a failing penitentiary system that produces so much violence and suicides.
CON.SI.PE expresses its full solidarity with the prison officer who was cowardly attacked today."
