A story of deception and boundless affection, the one involving a 94-year-old grandmother in Cagliari. The woman, deceived by a fake granddaughter in danger, risked losing family jewels and thousands of euros.
It all started with a phone call: a female voice, pretending to be her granddaughter, asked her grandmother for a large sum of money to avoid arrest. The woman, without hesitation, handed over all her savings and family valuables to a young woman who showed up at her house.
But the scam was foiled thanks to the promptness of the Carabinieri of the Cagliari Company. Analyzing the images from the surveillance cameras, the military identified the scammer, a twenty-year-old Neapolitan.
The hunt for the scammer
Thus began a full-blown manhunt between Sardinia and Campania. Thanks to the collaboration between the Carabinieri of the two regions, the young woman was tracked down and arrested upon her arrival in Naples, with all the stolen goods still in her possession.
A happy ending
The little old lady will soon be able to hug her precious ones again, the fruit of a life of work and affection. This story, in addition to warning about the dangers of scams, also demonstrates how the solidarity and professionalism of law enforcement can ensure justice.
Advice from the police against scams:
- Be wary of appearances
- Never open the door to strangers
- Don't rely on the identification badge alone: it's not enough!
- Limit your contact with the telephone: if people introduce themselves as relatives and ask you for money, take your time and call the emergency number 112 or a relative.
