Escalation of attacks on bus drivers AIR Campania has reached alarming levels. As many as 27 episodes of violence have been recorded since the beginning of the year alone, marking a worrying increase compared to previous years.
Faced with this emergency, local institutions have decided to intervene urgently. The Prefect of Napoli has convened an emergency technical table to implement all the necessary measures to bring the security on public transport.
“We cannot tolerate that our drivers, who perform an essential service for the community, are constantly under threat,” said the sole director of AIR Campania, Anthony Acconcia. “It is essential to guarantee them a safe and peaceful working environment.”
The measures adopted include increased controls in the most at-risk areas, an increase in the presence of law enforcement officers on buses during the most critical time slots, and the installation of video surveillance systems inside vehicles.
But the attacks are not only endangering the safety of drivers. The escalation of violence is generating a climate of fear among passengers, who feel increasingly less safe when using public transport. Many citizens have expressed their concern and have asked the institutions to intervene decisively.
“I’m afraid to take the bus at night,” confides a young student. “It’s not fair that we have to live in this climate of tension.”
The challenge now is to regain the trust of citizens and restore public transport to its role as an essential service for the community. Local institutions have committed to doing everything possible to achieve this goal, but a change in mentality on the part of citizens is also essential, who must contribute to creating an environment of greater respect and civility.”
