In Amalfi tourists are no longer considered simple visitors, but real “temporary residents”. With this innovative vision, the Municipality and the DMO Visit Amalfi have launched a participatory initiative to create a Tourist Etiquette, a set of rules of good behavior that can promote more responsible tourism that respects the city and the local community.
The project invites citizens to take part in the drafting of this etiquette, expressing their opinions through a public questionnaire. The aim is to collect suggestions on behaviors that residents consider important for those visiting Amalfi, promoting an approach that protects the cultural, environmental and social heritage of the city.
Mayor Daniele Milano explains: "We want to create a bond between the local community and visitors, so that the latter do not feel like simple tourists passing through, but real guests of our city. The Tourist Etiquette will help to spread the habits and rules that make Amalfi special, inviting those who arrive to feel part of a community that lives and works in this place."

The initiative is part of the Actions for a more sustainable tourism, a program presented on September 4, 2024 by the Mayor himself, which aims to manage the tourist phenomenon in a balanced and responsible way. "We do not want to impose bans, but to raise awareness among visitors through a social campaign and other communication initiatives. Galateo will be an example of participatory democracy, a document born from the needs and suggestions of citizens, with the aim of preserving the beauty and decorum of the city", adds Milan.
The questionnaire will be open until September 25, 2024 and, once the data has been collected and analyzed, the Galateo del Turista will be promoted with multilingual campaigns, both online and offline. The aim is to transform Amalfi into a virtuous example of tourism management, promoting a balance between the quality of life of residents and that of the tourist offer.
«Tourism is often associated with inconveniences for the population, but Amalfi wants to reverse this narrative. We do not intend to suffer tourism, but to manage it with awareness, equipping ourselves with tools such as the Tourism Plan and the DMO Visit Amalfi», concludes the Mayor.
