In the last few days, Forbes has released a piece of news that has shaken the world of technology and social media: Amazon reportedly interested in buying TikTok. This hypothesis opens up scenarios that until recently seemed unthinkable. But the real question is another: is it worth Amazon's while to tie itself to such a controversial product?
TikTok, despite its popularity among young people and its global success, has always had an ambiguous reputation, especially in the Western world. The social network is known for attracting views and users from borderline social strata, often pushing the limits with controversial, uneducational and in some cases violent content. An environment that some political parties and marginalized groups have exploited to gain visibility, riding the wave of a young and often vulnerable audience.
There are many accusations leveled at TikTok for its negative impact on young people. Several viral challenges born on the platform have unfortunately led to the death of many young people, “seduced” from the Chinese model of social media. There are countless articles, including those published also from us of Chronicles of Campania, who have reported on these tragic events, fueled by a platform that initially favored the spread of controversial and violent content. Although TikTok has tried to adopt stricter policies in recent times, it remains a social network fraught with problems and critical issues.
The TikTok Fund Bluff: A Trap for Creators?
In an attempt to improve its image and attract content creators, TikTok has launched the so-called TikTok Fund, a move that initially made many influencers dream. The creators, with enthusiastic videos, talked about how much they were earning thanks to the Chinese platform, but the reality was very different.
To get significant figures, millions of views were needed, with earnings that often did not exceed a few hundred euros. A model that proved unsustainable for many and, ultimately, a bluff.
If only it were that simple “pay" creators directly, why wouldn't other social networks have done it? Facebook or YouTube, leaders in the sector, have never adopted a similar model precisely because economically unsustainable and with too many critical issues basically.
TikTok promised creators the world, but the reality was much harsher. This dynamic raises a crucial question: does Amazon really want to tie itself to such an ambiguous reality?
The Risk for Amazon: Is It Worth It?
Amazon is a giant that builds its reputation on reliability, transparency and, above all, rigorous management of its operations. Acquiring TikTok would mean embracing a controversial platform that has attracted the attention of politicians and regulators in many countries, especially in the West, for its questionable handling of personal data and violent or ill-educational content.
However, it is important to consider another aspect. If Amazon, with its great experience and management skills, could take control of TikTok and drive out the Chinese, it could radically transform the social network.
It could give it a new life, based on truly democratic rules, capable of restoring trust to users and creating a safe and transparent platform. A TikTok managed by Amazon could become a reference model for the social networks of the future, capable of telling the world with seriousness and awareness.
Amazon and TikTok: A Possible Marriage?
The marriage between Amazon and TikTok may seem unusual, but it's not impossible. Amazon has already shown interest in expanding its presence in the media world, with its Prime Video platform and other entertainment-related operations.
However, TikTok represents a different and challenging terrain. If Amazon decides to move forward with this acquisition, it will have to deal with a platform that has deep roots in China, complicated content management, and a reputation that is not always positive.
It remains to be seen whether the e-commerce giant is really ready to take this step and undertake such a radical transformation. One thing is certain: TikTok's future could change dramatically if it were to become part of the Amazon ecosystem, bringing with it new opportunities and, inevitably, new challenges.
