Foggia mourns Antonio Ciccorelli: heroic firefighter, overwhelmed by the flood while rescuing others.
“A hero who is no longer with us”. With these words, colleagues and the community of San Severo mourn the loss of Antonio Ciccorelli, the 59-year-old chief of the Fire Department, swept away by the fury of a raging torrent.
The policeman was engaged in a delicate rescue operation following the violent storm that hit the province of Foggia yesterday evening.
The tragedy occurred on State Road 89, between San Severo and Apricena, when the Fire Brigade off-road vehicle, in which Ciccorelli and a colleague were traveling, was suddenly swept away by the rushing current.
Despite the difficult weather conditions and the imminent danger, the two firefighters intervened to provide assistance to the population affected by the bad weather.
Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done for Antonio Ciccorelli. His lifeless body was found inside the vehicle, submerged by the water, meters from the point where the off-road vehicle was overwhelmed. His colleague, although injured, managed to save himself and reach the shore.
Antonio Ciccorelli was close to retirement
Ciccorelli, esteemed and well-liked by all, was close to retirement. His passing leaves an unfillable void among the colleghi, who remember him as a generous, courageous man, always ready to put himself on the line for others.
The news of his tragic death has deeply shocked the local community, which is rallying around Ciccorelli's family in this moment of deep grief. The mayor of San Severo expressed the condolences of the entire city and ordered the display of flags at half-mast as a sign of mourning.
