Naples' San Paolo Hospital has returned to the spotlight for a case that has raised ethical and healthcare management concerns.
. Recently, two elderly patients in the Neurology department were caught on video lying in their beds, their arms tied to metal bed rails used to prevent falls.
This video, initially released by the newspaper Il Mattino, prompted ASL Napoli 1 Centro to begin an internal investigation to clarify the circumstances of this event.
The complaint was made by a visitor who had gone to visit a 92-year-old patient, recently hospitalized for a sudden neurological problem. In the video, two elderly people, including the 92-year-old, are clearly seen immobilized with bandages that appear to be plastic or pieces of bedsheets.
The general director of the ASL, Ciro Verdoliva, commented that hospital procedures do not allow the use of such containment methods except for strictly necessary needs.
The question now is to understand who and why decided to adopt this measure, considering that the beds are already equipped with anti-fall systems.
Verdoliva also mentioned that an investigation commission has been set up and that a detailed report is expected within a few days that could clarify any responsibilities.
THESan Paolo hospital, located in the Fuorigrotta district, is known for its difficult operating conditions and for having been the scene of previous cases of poor hygiene and sanitation, culminating in a trial that saw the acquittal of the defendants due to lack of evidence.
The case also brought to the attention of the regional council
The case has also attracted the attention of the Regional Council, with the leader of the League, Severino Nappi, who announced a question to question the management of regional health, criticizing the government of Vincenzo De Luca. Gennaro Saiello of the M5s has also proposed a question, underlining the need for continuous monitoring and preventive measures to avoid similar incidents.
