Caserta. The service of the two “sea-sweeping” boats “Sistema Pelikan” that monitored and cleaned the waters of the approximately forty kilometers of Caserta coastline in this summer of 2024 concluded with great success.

The vessels of Garbage Group – Ancona have, for the second consecutive year, operated in the stretch of sea that laps the Municipalities of Castel Volturno, Mondragone, Cellole and Sessa Aurunca.

In these 4.000 days, vessels specialized in marine pollution clean-up operations, removal of floating and semi-submerged solid waste, algae, foam and slime, oily and greasy substances, foam and hydrocarbons, have traveled a total of 60 nautical miles.

The vehicles also carried a drone for surveillance and identification of floating waste and a remote-controlled ROV submarine to scan the seabed and georeference the waste.

The first ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) data being processed right now show the recovery of plastic, rubber and wood waste of urban origin and from fishing activity in the area SOUTH of the patrolled stretch of coastline.

In the NORTH and, specifically, in Baia Domizia the waters are clean with good transparency qualities. The analyses show a significant increase in the sea temperature which, in the month of August, reached 30 degrees. The pH of the waters is 8,6, a good result which testifies to the general quality of the waters.

A trail of mucilage created by food residues from fish farms was found off the coast, a phenomenon generated by the general increase in sea temperatures recorded, and by the predominant marine currents from the northwest and mistral winds.

The phenomenon was treated and resolved with the use of the “Sistema Pelikan” boats in complete safety with the aid of booms. A sampling of the waters was delivered to ARPAC Campania which, in the coming days, will develop new analyses.

Monitoring activities through drones and ROVs have generated a natural deterrent effect and have significantly reduced any kind of abandonment, both at sea and along the coasts.

Last but not least, the element of environmental education automatically generated by the presence of the boats that contributed to a better understanding of the environmental, social, economic, cultural and ethical interdependencies of tourists and residents in the relationship between the marine environment, waste and pollutants.

“We are truly satisfied – explained the President of the Province Giorgio Magliocca – because the service of the two sea-sweeping boats, after last year's experimentation, has been fully operational this year, contributing to making the sea of our coast cleaner and more transparent.

The Province's project, managed by the offices of the Province's Environment Sector (director Gianni Solino and responsible Egidio Russo), was successful thanks to the teamwork carried out with the Municipalities of Castel Volturno, Mondragone, Cellole and Sessa Aurunca, whose Administrations have also guaranteed indispensable support and collaboration this year.

At the same time, there has been no shortage of strict and incessant checks carried out on public and private purifiers. In short, a 360-degree program that has worked and has also recorded important results this summer season.

A heartfelt thanks – concluded Magliocca – to the provincial councilor delegated to the Environment Giovanni Iovino, to the mayors Guido Di Leone (Cellole), Lorenzo Di Iorio (Sessa Aurunca), Francesco Lavagna (Mondragone) and Pasquale Marrandino (Castel Volturno)”.

“First of all, I would like to thank all the administrations that have placed their trust in us for the second consecutive year – declared Paolo Baldoni CEO of Garbage Group – together with them we are carrying forward an important path in the field of marine protection.

A shared vision of the strategic importance of the blue economy and the sustainable and responsible use of marine resources and their protection”
