Maria Rosaria Boccia confirmed that she used smart glasses during her visit to Montecitorio and that there was nothing illegal in their use.
However, the episode has reignited the debate about the use of these devices and their implications for privacy.
What are Meta and Ray-Ban smart glasses?
Born from the collaboration between Meta (formerly Facebook) and EssilorLuxottica, these glasses are much more than simple accessories. Integrated with a camera, a microphone and speakers, they allow you to take photos, record videos, listen to music and make calls. Externally, they look like normal sunglasses or eyeglasses, but they hide advanced technology.
How do they work and what can they record?
Recording functions are activated with a simple gesture. A discreet LED light lights up to indicate that recording is in progress, but in bright environments this may go unnoticed. Theoretically, these glasses can record anything in the user's field of vision, raising important privacy concerns.
Privacy and Ethical Concerns
The ability to discreetly record video and audio raises serious questions about the use of these devices. The main concerns are:
Non-consensual surveillance: Smart glasses could be used to record people without their consent, violating their privacy.
Disclosure of private content: Recorded videos and photos could be shared on social media or used for illegal purposes.
Content Manipulation: Deepfake technology could be used to alter recorded videos, spreading false and harmful information.
The public debate
The Boccia incident has brought the issue of regulating smart glasses to the forefront. A thorough public debate is needed to determine what limits should be placed on the use of this technology and how to ensure privacy protections.
