A prisoner suffering from psychiatric disorders, despite being under surveillance, devastated an emergency room at the Ospedale del Mare in Naples, making it unusable.
The episode, which occurred yesterday afternoon, was made public by the prison police union Uspp, through the president Joseph Moretti and the secretary of Campania Ciro Auricchio.
“Both the general director of the ASL and the director of the hospital facility were informed of the incident,” the two unionists continued.
The union reiterates the need to transfer psychiatric inmates from prisons to specialized facilities:
“As we have repeatedly denounced, mental health in prison does not work due to the lack of psychiatrists. Rams, furthermore, they are a failure: the waiting lists are long and, thus, the prisoners, instead of being taken care of by the regional public health system, remain in prison".
“The prison police are exhausted – Moretti and Auricchio underline – left alone in this general chaos. We have few tools to contrast and the agents must, at the same time, play the role of psychologists and pedagogues, because there is also a lack of support figures, especially in the afternoon shifts.
And all this happens with the indifference of the regional administration. Only thanks to the commitment of the agents is it possible to maintain order and internal security”, conclude the president and the regional secretary of the Uspp.
