This morning the funeral of Salvatore Borrelli, who committed suicide in the prison of Naples, took place in Benevento last September 2th.
The ceremony was also attended by the Campania guarantor of prisoners, Samuele Ciambriello, who declared: “In recent days I have spoken several times with Salvatore's daughter and family members, and I have been able to ascertain, through the documentation they showed me, that Mr Borrelli suffered from a borderline personality disorder.
Furthermore, his life was marked by substance abuse. In the prison of Benevento, already in May, he had attempted suicide for the first time, repeating it the following month, always with the same methods.
Despite periodic visits to the psychiatrist and psychopharmacological therapy, his existential malaise persisted. Salvatore was aware of his problem and only wanted to be treated and transferred”.
Ciambriello then added: "Salvatore is the sixty-eighth inmate to take his own life in Italian prisons. I wonder how it is possible that the numerous anti-suicide protocols activated in prison are still unable to prevent people like Salvatore from escaping the control of the competent authorities and committing extreme acts."
