A priest in the morning and a footballer in the afternoon. This is the double life of Don Francesco Ametta, 29, assistant priest of San Martino in Rio, in the Reggio Emilia area, who last Wednesday surprised everyone by scoring in the Coppa Italia Promozione match between Sammartinese and Bagnolese. “Unfortunately it wasn't enough, we lost 3-2, but it was a great emotion”, said the young priest, who has already won the title of “goal-scoring priest.”
The passion for football has always accompanied Don Francesco, who as a boy played at a good level in the surroundings of Reggio Emilia. “But at 19, the most important call from the Lord arrived”, he explains. So he decided to enter the seminary, putting football aside. However, the call of football never abandoned him.
“Last November I asked to be able to train with Sammartinese”, says Don Francesco. And from that moment he returned to the playing fields. This year he was officially registered, and on Wednesday, unexpectedly, he played the entire 90 minutes of the match, scoring his first goal since he became a priest.
