“Funky Maestro”, the posthumous album and last project of unreleased material by Pino D'Angiò, will be released on Friday 13 September.
“Funky Maestro” is an EP that collects the last four songs written and produced by Pino D'Angiò, before his death on July 6th.
Born in 1952 and originally from Pompeii, Pino D'Angiò is considered a true icon of 80s music. His name remains linked, in our country, especially to funk, being recognized as one of the pioneers of the genre, and to the so-called "italo disco". Over the years he has experimented, with his music, different musical genres that have led him to tread European and American stages and to obtain prestigious awards such as the "Rhythm & Soul Music Awards" received in 2001 in the United States.
Without ever taking himself too seriously and with great irony, Pino D'angiò has held many tours around the world, worked as an author for various artists, including Mina, and continued to write and produce music.
Although illness and health problems forced him to stop for eleven years, in 2024, he accepted Bnkr44's invitation and participated as a guest on the cover night at the Sanremo Festival, performing "MA CHE IDEA", a revisited version of "Ma quale idea", which immediately achieved great success both on the radio and on digital platforms, thus making new generations rediscover his recording repertoire.
Being able to live with Pino as a parent was a privilege that is difficult to explain. Artistically, between genius, culture and irony, he influenced over 40 years of scene and musical genres” says Francesco, Pino’s son:
He always wanted to stay out of the spotlight, he was an anti-diva, a dark innovator. From funk to rap, from disco to trance: today dad's sound is everywhere. Untouchable. Needless to say, this EP has a particular meaning and flavor.
It's the last unreleased project that Pino —or rather, his father—had fun working on in the studio. The strength to go into the studio and create joy was stronger than the rest. Only a giant like him could have achieved something like this despite everything."
To write the songs for the EP, Pino worked with KASHMERE, a young and talented artist from Ticino.
“Funky Maestro” represents a further chapter in the journey of an artist who has revolutionized Italian music with courage, without ever losing his identity, accompanying irony and a smile with the wisdom of someone who has lived but doesn't want to make you feel the weight of it.
