The volcanic exercise of October 11th and 12th on Campi Flegrei will also involve the red zones of the Municipality of Napoli, in which there is currently little interest from citizens, namely Bagnoli, Fuorigrotta, Soccavo and Posillipo.
“The exercises are important, especially for citizens because in this way we can actually test whether the activities implemented are useful and whether we need to improve on some critical issues, which of course can only be discovered by testing”.
The mayor of said this Pozzuoli, Luigi Manzoni, on the sidelines of the meeting with citizens on the volcanic emergency exercise at Campi Flegrei scheduled for 11 and 12 October.
The mayor then encouraged citizens to sign up for the exercise, to obtain a much greater participation than the previous exercise in June, in which only a few people participated. The exercise can be signed up for on the website of the Civil Protection.
On October 12th there will be an evacuation simulation with citizens who decide to participate and also with schools and hospitals. In this regard, those responsible for the exercise ask parents to collaborate, for example by not going to school with their children, who will be taken to safe areas by trained teachers.
For the citizens who join, there will be a gathering in five meeting points, from which they will then be taken by buses of the Campania Region: then there will be a simulation of their transfer by train to Lombardy and other regions. Staff and vehicles will be mobilized in the hospitals, with a simulation of the patients to be evacuated.
The head of the Civil Protection Department, Fabio Ciciliano explained: “We know that Neapolitans tend to stay a little detached from this fear, because they feel quite distant, but this is not the case because the red zone takes a slice of Naples.
I'll give you a fairly simple example: if the Vesuvius risk exercise were to be done, citizen participation would be stronger, because Vesuvius can be seen, it is immediately perceptible. But Neapolitans must know that there is a series of underground volcanoes at Campi Flegrei: it exists, it is there, even if from a visual point of view it is perceived much less. Therefore a great prevention activity is needed”.
Ciciliano, when asked if the underground volcano of Campi Flegrei is to be feared today, replied: “Fear is a word that means a lot and can mean little. The important thing is to be clear with the citizens: these are some of the most controlled lands in the world, with the international scientific community collaborating with the national one.
We do not want to alarm the population, but we must understand that we are potentially in a territory that can lead to situations of great discomfort, if not death and destruction. The fact that the scientific community studies this phenomenon every day makes us feel moderately calm”.
