Naples, street vendor “Tonino o spigaiuol” hit and killed

Naples. Last night, around 19:30 PM, a dramatic accident shattered the tranquility of Via Cupa Cintia. Antonio Di Napoli, 74, a respected street vendor known to all as "Tonin o Spigaiuol" (Tonin or Spigaiuol), was involved.

The man was crossing the pedestrian crossing near the Azzurro shopping centre near the Fuorigrotta ring road exit when he was hit head-on by a car travelling at high speed.

The impact was very violent and left no escape for the man, who died instantly. The 74-year-old leaves behind his wife and 4 children.

The news of his passing has thrown the entire community into despair. Antonio was a point of reference for many in the Traiano district, appreciated for his genuineness and his contagious smile. On social networks, messages of condolence and closeness to the family follow one another, still incredulous in the face of so much pain.

The 118 health workers and the police intervened on the scene. The driver of the car, who was unharmed, was subjected to the usual checks and is now under investigation for road homicide. The car was seized as well as the body of the victim who will undergo an autopsy.

Pending the results of tests that will determine whether the driver of the car was fit to drive at the time of the impact, his license has been revoked.

The municipal police are working to reconstruct the exact dynamics of theaccident and ascertain any responsibilities.

His son Salvatore posted a photo and a memory on social media that received hundreds of reactions and comments: “Hi dad, tonight I received news I wasn’t expecting. You passed away suddenly in an accident. I chose this photo because this is what you liked to do, for more than 50 years. I remember you like this, with your crazy desire to sell ears of corn. And everyone knew you as Tonin or Spigaiuol. Hi dad”.
