Jabil: Clash over alternatives to layoffs

Yet another stalemate at the round table discussion held yesterday in Rome at the Ministry of Labor, regarding the dispute at the plant Jabil by Marcianise.

The meeting was attended by company management, unions, representatives of the Ministry, MIMIT (Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy), the Campania Region, and Invitalia, a company of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The American multinational electronics company has already announced that it will close the Marcianise plant by March 2025, thus leaving Italy. This decision puts the jobs of the 420 employees of the site at risk.

After months of meetings in Rome and various demonstrations in Caserta, Naples and the capital, there seems to be a deep rift between the parties, which at the moment appears unbridgeable.

Jabil's proposal to avoid layoffs involves rehiring the 420 workers in a new company, Tme Assembly Engineering Srl, created by Invitalia in collaboration with the Caserta-based company Tme, based in Portico di Caserta. This new entity should ensure tangible production activity.

However, Francesco Percuoco, secretary of the Fiom-Cgil Caserta branch, who attended the meeting along with representatives of other unions, stated that at the moment "there is no sign of any concrete production activity; we are still making predictions about what might happen in the coming years."

Meanwhile, many Jabil workers, who arrived in Rome from Marcianise thanks to buses organized by the unions, occupied the entrance to the Ministry of Labor.

According to what has leaked from the industrial plan of Tme Assembly Engineering Srl, full employment of the 420 employees could be achieved only within three years, therefore not before 2028 and only if certain conditions are met.

In the meantime, further layoffs are expected in the new company, as has been the case for years with Jabil.

"Workers need certainty, not predictions about future scenarios," Percuoco added, emphasizing that politicians must intervene. So far, only technicians and managers have met, who have no decision-making power and have limited themselves to reiterating that direct intervention is not possible due to European competition regulations.

"The Jabil dispute already seems sealed, but we will not give up. We will continue to demonstrate and make our voices heard in every way possible."
