Restoration and redevelopment of the former Naples Fish Market, located in Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, has officially begun. The building, designed by architect Luigi Cosenza and a symbol of significant architectural heritage, will be given new life thanks to an initiative promoted by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. The goal is to transform this historic space into a cultural hub for the city, in collaboration with the Teatro Mercadante and using the recently reclaimed nearby Marinella Park.
After years of abandonment and decay, during which the building was repeatedly occupied by homeless people, the Municipality has begun a new phase of rebirth.

The recovery project, financed with 10 million euros from the PNRR Fund, was developed by the Strategic Projects Service of the Municipality of Naples, with the scientific collaboration of the Department of Architecture of the University Frederick II of Naples and the Department of Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome. Both universities are involved in the study of the structure due to its architectural and engineering significance.
The work is scheduled for completion in 2026, and is part of a broader urban regeneration strategy for the port area. The administration's goal is to restore a new centrality to this area of Naples, with a cultural destination and public service for the community. The new cultural center will be closely linked to the Teatro Stabile di Napoli and will offer spaces and services that will enrich the city's cultural offerings.
