On Wednesday, September 25th, at 11:30 a.m., Antica Distilleria Petrone's limoncello will be the protagonist of a one-of-a-kind event: 450 bottles of the famous liqueur will be immersed in the depths of the Gulf of Naples, near Castel dell'Ovo, for a year of underwater maturation. This initiative combines innovation, science, and social commitment, thanks to the collaboration with the project Bust Busters, aimed at the re-education of the boys of the Penal Area of Napoli.

The idea of refining limoncello in the sea is not new to Andrea Petrone, general manager of Antica Distilleria Petrone, who in the past had experimented with immersing his liqueurs off the coast of Mondragone. However, this time, the initiative has a particularly significant impact: “I immediately thought of the MareNostrum and Bust Busters project, which aims to offer a second chance to the boys of the Penal Area of Naples”, Petrone said. The young people involved participated in immersion courses and theoretical training on geological and environmental heritage, thus combining social issues with scientific research.

The children will be guided through this experience by Archeoclub of Italy, a key partner of the project. Rosario Santanastasio, president of the association, underlined the importance of this initiative as an opportunity for growth for young people: “It’s a new path for them, capable of uniting the social with scientific research.” Bottle diving is an educational opportunity, offering participants first-hand knowledge of marine heritage and conservation work.

The Bust Busters project, developed by Archeoclub in collaboration with the Juvenile Justice Center of Campania , Marina Militare, is an example of inclusion and re-education through the sea. The director of the Juvenile Justice Center of Campania, Nicola Palmiero, highlighted how teamwork and the discovery of the sea can help kids rediscover respect for themselves and for others. “The sea educator from yesterday to today”, commented Fabio Danese, Captain of the Navy, “offers life and work lessons, accustoming young people to respect and loyalty.”

Making the event even more special will be the presence of Claudia Conte, godmother of the initiative, who expressed enthusiasm for a project that she defines as a “model of inclusion and active citizenship”.

The underwater refinement of limoncello is not just a matter of innovative marketing. Once brought to the surface, the bottles will be subjected to a scientific study conducted by the Department of Agriculture of the University of Naples Federico II, which will analyze the effects of staying in the sea on the maturation of the liqueur. The bottles will remain for a year at a depth of 15 meters, protected from light and oxygen, in an ideal environment to enhance their organoleptic qualities.

The event, created thanks to the collaboration with numerous partners including the City of Naples, the Coast Guard, Royal Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia e YDigital Firm, represents a symbol of rebirth and hope for the young people involved, offering them not only a second chance, but also the opportunity to contribute to a scientific and cultural experiment of great importance.
