Starting September 6, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) will reopen to the public the Farnese Gems collection, one of the most prestigious glyptic collections in the world. The collection, famous for its unity and for the presence of both ancient and modern gems, will be exhibited to the public with a renewed layout.

Inaugural Event

The reopening event will be held at 12:00 PM, attended by Massimo Osanna, Director General of the Ministry of Culture Museums. During the event, Osanna emphasized the importance of this collection for both its antiquarian and artistic value. He also announced that the numismatics section will be reopened to visitors by December, including a space dedicated to the museum's ancient goldsmith works.

While maintaining the original layout curated by Professor Carlo Gasparri in 1995, the renovations aimed to further enhance the history and beauty of the exhibited works. The educational materials have been updated in bilingual versions and accompanied by images, while the display cases have been enhanced with new energy-saving lighting and illustrative photographic enlargements.

The Farnese Cup and Other Gems

Among the 492 pieces on display, including cameos and intaglios, the famous Tazza Farnese stands out, considered one of the greatest masterpieces of glyptic art. The exhibition was designed to promote awareness of the precious pieces on display, enhancing the visitor experience with illuminated spotlights that allow them to be admired in all their detail.

Historical Insights

The new information panels offer insights into the great collectors who contributed to building and enriching this collection over time. Figures such as Pietro Barbo, Lorenzo de' Medici, Cardinals Ranuccio and Alessandro Farnese, and the scholar Fulvio Orsini are recounted through their influences and acquisitions. The educational materials are designed to provide visitors with an experience that is not only visual but also cognitive and emotional.

An Exciting Exhibition

The renovated display of the Farnese Gems collection offers a unique exhibition experience, combining art, history, and technology to take visitors on a journey through centuries of glyptic mastery. With these improvements, the MANN confirms its commitment to promoting its cultural heritage, providing the public with an accessible and immersive experience of some of the most precious works in the history of art.
