Melito. Yet another episode of aggression against doctors: it happened yesterday evening at the headquarters of the Melito medical guard.
Three women and two men beat the two doctors on duty (a 31-year-old and a 38-year-old) because they refused to make a home visit to one of their relatives.
A patrol of the Carabinieri station intervened on the spot. The two injured doctors went independently to the emergency room of the Giugliano hospital for minor injuries to the head and neck.
Investigations are underway to trace the identity of the 5 attackers. The military is examining some images filmed by the injured themselves during the attack.
And this morning a harsh statement arrived from Doctor Salvatore Caiazza, president of “Doctors without careers”.
“Soon, the usual declarations of solidarity will arrive from institutional figures, such as the President of the Order of Physicians and Surgeons and the President of the National Federation of Orders of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as from the top management of the local health authority. But, as always, they will be just words!
We have now reached the limit! Not to mention the second “coffee killer”! The same thing happened last year in Quarto and even before in Giugliano, where respectively the medical certificate requested by the patient was refused, and where a relative was denied the medical certificate for his relative by the hospital doctor.
We have repeatedly reiterated that we do not need empty solidarity, but concrete solutions to prevent these episodes! The only real solution is the immediate arrest of the attackers and their summary trial, in addition to the revision of the doctors' employment contract, which is in increasingly worsening conditions. It is time for Italy to become a European country also in this sector, and not just "a beautiful but useless country!"
It is useless to propose solutions such as remote visits via IT platforms, solutions that are talked about but do not protect professionals. “Doctors without Careers” appeals to the President of the Council, Hon. Giorgia Meloni, and to the Minister of Health, Prof. Orazio Schillaci, to ignore bizarre and self-referential proposals, and to take into consideration the requests of the vast majority of Italian doctors: protection of their safety and an employment contract that guarantees them a solid legal status, and not, as today, exposed to blackmail and attacks on legal, contractual and physical levels.
We also appeal to the Presidents of the Regions and the Health Councilors, in particular to the President of the Regional Council of Campania, Hon. Vincenzo De Luca, to use his authority to make the work of general practitioners a service to protect the health of citizens, but also a profession protected by executive regulations.
The medical profession, which assists citizens, must be defended and protected. Otherwise, in a not too distant future, the primary care doctor will be just a memory. This is demonstrated by the failure to assign more than half of the areas lacking general medicine in Campania at the beginning of the month.
We are tired of being the scapegoats for the managerial incapacity of public bodies, which should make decisive decisions instead of continuing to float in the typical "Italian style", the worst that can exist!
If we continue to be abandoned, we are ready to demonstrate at the Campania Region Health Department, together with the citizens, and to reduce our healthcare service to a minimum, until one of the trade union organizations in the category decides to seriously call a strike".
