The famous neomelodic singer Neapolitan, Antonio Borrelli, aka “Topolino”, is at the center of a new controversy.
For years, his performances from the balcony of his house in Via Atri, in the heart of the historic center, have attracted tourists from all over the world, but are sparking indignation among residents and, in particular, among students and teachers of the Diaz Institute, located nearby.
The complaints concern the excessive volume of the music, which disturbs daily activities and prevents students from concentrating during lessons. Despite repeated reports to the authorities, the situation does not seem to be improving.
A petition, as reported by today's edition of Repubblica, signed by residents and shopkeepers, asks for the intervention of the prefect, the police commissioner and the mayor to put an end to this situation.
Residents report a “continuous hammering” that compromises the quality of life in the neighborhood and damages the image of the city.
The Diaz Institute also officially asked “Topolino” to reduce the volume of the music, but without obtaining satisfactory results. The principal of the institute, Daniela Oliviero, emphasized how this type of music is not in line with the modern and culturally rich image that Naples should project to the world.
Local authorities are aware of the situation and have already initiated several procedures against “Topolino”, accused of carrying out an unauthorized public entertainment activity. However, so far, the measures taken have not been sufficient to resolve the problem.
