A dramatic turn of events took place yesterday morning at the appeal trial, once again involving the leaders and underlings of the Silenzio clan of San Giovanni a Teduccio: the boss Francesco Silenzio, acquitted in the first instance, was found guilty of the murder of Annamaria Palmieri, known as “Nino D'Angelo”, killed in the Bronx in 2018.
Despite the conviction, the punishment for the boss of the eastern area of Naples has not changed: 20 years of imprisonment, thanks to the abbreviated procedure chosen previously and the absence of the aggravating circumstance for futile and abject reasons. The Court confirmed the previous verdict, with some agreed modifications.
On November 18, 2022, Judge Fabio Lombardo acquitted Francesco Silenzio of the charge of murdering Annamaria Palmieri, a relative and former ally who later became his bitter enemy due to her loyalty to the Formicola clan.
The accusation was based on the revelations of the collaborator of justice Antonio Costabile, known as “'o cerrano”, who had shed light on the ambush in which the woman lost her life after having helped Assunta Formicola, Silenzio's ex-wife, in a private matter.
However, the judge did not consider the prosecution's reconstructions convincing and accepted the defense arguments, also based on a ballistics consultancy, which dismantled the statements of Costabile and seven other informants. For this reason, Silence he had been acquitted in the first instance of the charge of murder, because "the fact does not exist". However, yesterday the situation changed with the new conviction.
In the first instance, Francesco Silenzio had already received a 20-year sentence for criminal association (as leader and promoter) and drug trafficking.
