Naples is preparing to relive a pivotal moment in its history: tomorrow, September 11, at 10:30 a.m., the Cervantes Institute will host a press conference to present the seventh edition of the historical reenactment dedicated to the Pact between Naples and San Gennaro.

In 1527, the Neapolitan city, exhausted by sieges, eruptions of Vesuvius and plagues, made a solemn pact with its patron saint.

Its representatives of the Six Seats (the political-administrative system was governed from 1100 to 1800 by the Patrician Families gathered in the five noble Seats of Capuana, Nilo, Montagna, Porto and Portanova and by the People who had their own Seat of the same name) to sign a real notarial contract with San Gennaro.

It was September 13, 1527 when the contract was signed on the main altar of the Cathedral, which is still jealously guarded today by the Deputation of the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro.

Now in its seventh edition, to commemorate those days, the Association I Sedili di Napoli Ets has brought together many historical reenactment associations from outside the city and the region, in a great event, sponsored by the Mic and the Spanish Embassy in Italy, in collaboration with the Municipality of Naples and the Sanctuary of the Basilica del Carmine Maggiore and in support of the Committee promoting the UNESCO candidacy of the cult and devotion of San Gennaro in Naples and in the world.

The event “1527, when Naples made a vow to San Gennaro”, will be held in Naples next Saturday, September 14 and will include: guided visits to an exhibition of a late 500th century polyptych with an unusual image of a “bearded” San Gennaro in the church of S. Maria della Mercede a Montecalvario;

the theatrical reenactment of three historical moments in the church of Santa Croce and Purgatory at the Market, on the Cathedral Square and the last one dedicated to the Triumph of Charles V in Piazza Mercato; historical dances in the church of Santa Croce and Purgatory at the Market; a large procession with Pistonieri, knights and flag-wavers that, starting from the Sanctuary Basilica of S. Maria del Carmine Maggiore, will travel along some streets of the historic center and will end with a spectacular equestrian joust with duels in armor in Piazza Mercato.

A gesture of faith that will be commemorated on September 14th through a rich program of events: guided tours, theatrical performances, historical dances and a great procession that will culminate in a spectacular equestrian joust.
