From 20 to 22 September, Italy is preparing to host the 32nd edition of We clean the world, the famous environmental volunteering campaign organized by Legambiente. Under the motto "For a climate of peace", the initiative aims to promote not only environmental protection, but also a sense of community, active citizenship and social and climate justice.
The event will be held throughout Italy, involving citizens of all ages, from large cities to small towns. Students, families, local governments and companies will come together to clean green areas, streets, squares, beaches and river banks from abandoned waste. In Campania, numerous events are scheduled throughout the weekend, with volunteers ready to do their part for a healthier environment. The first event, a national preview, will take place tomorrow, September 18, at 10:30 in Naples, in the central Piazza Garibaldi, a crossroads of cultures and the subject of an urban regeneration project.
Naples: the problem of waste in urban parks
On the occasion of the event, Legambiente presented the data of the survey Park Litter 2024, which highlights the serious situation of the urban parks of Naples. They have been collected and catalogued 1.691 wastes in ten city parks, with an average of 1,6 waste per square meter monitored. Among the parks examined are the Villa Comunale, the Viviani Park and the Massimo Troisi Park.
I cigarette butts are the most present waste, representing 35,8% of the total, followed by plastic fragments and disposable packaging, highlighting the need for greater education and attention in waste management. The situation of Neapolitan parks remains critical also due to the lack of covers on the bins and poor maintenance. The wind often disperses the waste, while the bins for separate waste collection, present in 80% of cases, are unable to contain the accumulation of garbage.
“Public green areas play a strategic role in the quality of urban life, but are too often neglected,” he said Francesca Ferro, director of Legambiente Campania. “In Naples, many parks are closed for long periods of maintenance, such as the Parco del Poggio, closed for over a year, and the Parco di Scampia, of which there is little news.”
Weekend events in Campania
Among the many events planned, the initiative at the stands out Lake Matese, Saturday 21 September, and the activities on the occasion of theAppia Day a Benevento and along the Appia Antica, which will involve volunteers in cleaning and guided tours. The campaign will also be told by Rai with a special dedicated program on Rai3, culminating on September 22 with a special on TGR. With We clean the 2024 World, Legambiente invites everyone to make a concrete gesture for the environment, joining forces to build a cleaner and more inclusive future.
