The controversy over the case of patients tied to beds in some hospitals in Naples continues to inflame public debate. But the presidents of the Orders of Physicians and Nurses are calling for caution and asking that the truth emerge before making hasty judgments. Bruno Zuccarelli, president of the Order of Physicians of Napoli, and Teresa Rea, president of the Order of Nursing Professions, reiterated the importance of a correct evaluation of the facts: "There are cases in which, unfortunately, it is necessary to contain patients to ensure their own safety. This does not mean that there could not have been errors or omissions, but the investigations will establish this. The ASL has already started an internal investigation, and reaching conclusions without waiting for the results risks worsening the situation."
The two presidents warn against the temptation to create media trials before the facts are ascertained. According to them, accusing doctors and nurses right away only fuels the climate of tension, increasing the risk of physical attacks against health personnel. «In an already difficult context for healthcare, creating a simplistic narrative of “good versus evil” is dangerous and distorting», underline Zuccarelli and Rea.
The problem, according to the two exponents, lies in the tendency to immediately believe the worst, triggering controversies that fuel anger and frustration. «Scandals and accusations often become the daily bread of those who feed on the judgment of others», they say. «We should instead ask ourselves: who benefits from all this?»
Zuccarelli and Rea reiterate that the issue of patient restraint is extremely delicate and painful, and cannot be addressed superficially. "We need an approach that respects the complexity of the issue and that does not limit itself to simplifying the reality in black and white. Only in this way can we ensure that the truth emerges and that any responsibilities are ascertained while respecting the dignity of all."
