The North and the Tyrrhenian regions of Central Italy are ready to face 24 hours of intense bad weather, with heavy thunderstorms and cloudbursts. Subsequently, a sunny truce will arrive between Friday and Saturday, but a new return of bad weather is expected from Sunday. This is what emerges from the forecasts of Andrea Garbinato, editor of the website iLMeteo.it.
According to Garbinato, in the next few hours the bad weather will continue to hit the North-West and the central-northern Tyrrhenian side, with torrential rains that will also extend to the North-East from the afternoon. Accumulations of more than 150 mm of rain are expected, not only in the Alpine areas but also in the plains, while along the coasts the high sea temperatures will contribute to intensifying the stormy phenomena.
The severe weather will be accompanied by downburst winds, with horizontal gusts that could reach speeds between 90 and 100 km/h.

"The cause of this extreme weather - explains Garbinato - It is the clash between very different air masses: the polar air of the Atlantic cyclone coming from Iceland and the subtropical air that persists over our country after weeks of anticyclone." Fortunately, the disturbance will be rapid: on Friday the cyclone will move towards Spain, leaving room for a sunny day in much of the country. However, this respite will be short-lived, as from Sunday afternoon the bad weather will return, with an almost autumnal climate that will characterize the next week.
In detail, Thursday 5 September will be marked by widespread bad weather in the North, with increasingly intense phenomena also in the Centre and storms arriving in Campania and Sicilia, then spreading to the rest of the South. Friday, September 6th will see a general improvement, with residual showers only in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Eastern Liguria, and some areas of Upper Tuscany. Saturday, September 7th will be a sunny and warm day across Italy, but instability will return as early as Sunday afternoon.
