A woman suffering from severe tetraventricular hydrocephalus with triple X genetic syndrome gave birth to her baby girl at the "Malzoni Research Hospital" in Avellino.
The woman was followed during her pregnancy by Raffaele Petta, a doctor from Salerno who is an expert in high-risk pregnancies. A story with a happy ending that saw as protagonists Rosa Biondini, a 33-year-old employee and Koné Souleymane, a 25-year-old Ivorian chef by profession.
Despite the fears and difficulties related to the particularity of the case, last August 30 they were able to rejoice for the birth of Rahma Mari Koné Biondini, born weighing 3,630 kilos and 50 centimetres long.
The couple had learned the news of the pregnancy last January with joy but also with fear and concern. Mrs. Rosa, in fact, suffers from a serious brain disease with dilation of all the cerebral ventricles, for which she had been operated.
She is also a carrier of a chromosomal abnormality because she has three X chromosomes, not the normal two. She was advised to terminate the pregnancy because continuing it could have put her life in danger.
The woman nevertheless decided to continue with the pregnancy and entrust herself to Dr. Raffaele Petta. "Since it was a high-risk pregnancy, a multidisciplinary approach was necessary to monitor it, involving the geneticist, Dr. Sonia Amabile," explained Dr. Raffaele Petta.
