The eve of Thursday's Coppa Italia derby between Genoa and Sampdoria, won on penalties by the Blucerchiati, was marked by a serious escalation of violence. Despite the announcement by Police Commissioner Silvia Burdese, who had promised to crack down on the troublemakers, clashes between ultras marred an evening that should have been dedicated to sport.

The clashes, which broke out before and during the match, led to heavy interventions by the authorities. The Public Prosecutor's Office Genoa is evaluating extremely serious charges against the ultras involved: criminal association, devastation and looting, crimes that could result in sentences of up to 15 years in prison. The Digos is working to identify all those responsible, with the aim of reconstructing a dynamic that seems to have been planned down to the smallest detail.

The violence broke out with a real urban guerrilla warfare. At the heart of the dispute, the historic rivalry between the two fan bases, accentuated by the waving of symbolic banners that unleashed tension. Five ultras have already been arrested, with precautionary measures such as house arrest and a Daspo ordered by the judge. Some ultras from Marseille, present in Genoa to support Genoa, were also involved and risk expulsion from European territory.

Heavy consequences

The consequences of the clashes were devastating. Over 38 officers were injured, while the city of Genoa suffered damage and disorder. Faced with the gravity of the situation, the prefect decided to have the next match between Genoa and Juventus played behind closed doors, a measure necessary to guarantee public safety.

The rivalry between Genoa and Sampdoria has always been heated, but in recent months it has degenerated into a spiral of uncontrolled violence. Ambushes, stabbings and now street clashes: the tension between the two fan bases has gone beyond the limit, transforming sporting passion into hatred and violence.
