After being attacked and threatened by an inmate, the medical director of the Secondigliano prison has resigned, leaving a significant void in one of Campania's most important prisons. The incident occurred about a month ago, when the director, an employee of the ASL Napoli 1 Centro, was the victim of an assault inside the prison. Subsequently, through his lawyer, he filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office, also requesting the transfer of the inmate responsible for the violence to another facility, a request that has so far been denied.

The incident has raised concerns and protests, especially from the USPP union (Penitentiary Police Union), which has denounced the "managerial confusion and inertia" of the authorities responsible for managing prisons in Campania. Giuseppe Moretti, president of the USPP, and Ciro Auricchio, regional secretary, emphasized that in this chaotic situation, not only are prison officers bearing the brunt, often left alone to deal with an increase in incidents of violence, but also healthcare workers.

"The loss of a valid health manager, esteemed by all the medical and nursing staff and by the prison police, represents a hard blow for the prison Secondigliano," The two union representatives stated. They then expressed solidarity with the professional, calling for immediate action from the administration and political leadership to review the superintendent's actions, highlighting the failure to implement departmental circulars. The union also calls for urgent measures to ensure the safety of all staff working in the region's prisons.

Finally, the union reiterated the need to address the emergency related to the presence of cell phones inside cells, a problem also highlighted by prosecutor Nicola Gratteri. "It is essential to shield penitentiary institutions by installing signal blockers, to prevent the illegal use of cell phones inside prisons," the USPP representatives concluded.
