Unexploded shells, threatening letters, and a climate of constant threats had pushed the provincial committee for order and security to arrange for an escort for the trade unionist under pressure.
However, it was all false, and the Rome court handed down the conviction. Rosita Galdiero, 47, originally from Solopaca and former provincial secretary of the Fiom -Cgil union, then national director, had built a reputation as an anti-Camorra champion, living under police protection and always accompanied by her driver, Fulvio Piccirilli.
During an investigation, the Digos of Benevento intercepted conversations that raised doubts about the threats reported by the unionist. The investigators investigated the matter further and discovered that the threatening letters and the bullet had been invented by the driver, in agreement with Galdiero herself.
The investigation, started in Benevento, was then transferred for jurisdiction to the Rome prosecutor's office, since one of the threatening letters had been sent to her residence in the capital, where Galdiero had moved as a national manager. Following this incident, she was fired.
Both Galdiero and Piccirilli pleaded guilty and were sentenced to one year and six months in prison, with a suspended sentence, for simulation of a crime, fraud, and illegal possession of an unexploded projectile.
