Rome paid homage to one of its most beloved cinematic icons, Sophia Loren, on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday.
In a touching ceremony held at The Space Cinema Moderno, the diva received her first “Key di Cinecittà“, a special recognition desired by the Ministry of Culture, Cinecittà and Archivio Luce to celebrate his extraordinary contribution to world cinematography.The prestigious award was presented by the Undersecretary for Culture Lucia Borgonzoni and the President of Cinecittà Chiara Sbarigia. “To the diva with singular talent and irresistible charm who with her interpretations has written the history of the seventh art”, states the motivation for the award, underlining the charisma and versatility of Loren, an artist who was able to represent the image of the most beautiful Italy on an international level.
The evening concluded with the screening of the episode “Pizze a credito”, taken from the 1954 masterpiece “L’oro di Napoli” by Vittorio De Sica, restored in 4K by Luce Cinecittà and Filmauro. The initiative is part of a broader program of celebrations for the actress’s 90th birthday, which began last June in New York with a retrospective organized in collaboration with the Lincoln Center and the Italian Cultural Institute in Barcelona. The next event is scheduled for November in Los Angeles, where the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will pay homage to the actress with a complete retrospective and the presentation of the restoration of the film “Saturday, Sunday and Monday”.
Undersecretary Lucia Borgonzoni declared: "It is the duty of the Ministry of Culture to pay homage to an artist of exceptional talent who has brought so much prestige to Italy in the world. Her memorable performances in masterpieces of world cinema are pages of history of which we must be proud, a heritage that it is our duty to preserve for future generations."

A symbol that summarizes my career and at the same time takes me back to my beginnings, full of hope and confidence in the future.
