A Review of Cuban Works
The exhibition offers a journey through thirty works including paintings, drawings, graphics, photographs and performance videos, created by Cuban artists. Among the main protagonists of the exhibition are names such as Denis Ascanio, Carlos Boix, Leonardo Feal Bonachea, José Antonio Choy López, Ángel Delgado, José Ángel Rosabal Fajardo, Carlos Martiel and Ángel Ricardo Ríos. The exhibition opens with the graphic works of Wifredo Lam, who marked a season of rebirth of Cuban art, combining the anthropological dimension with the European avant-gardes of the 1940s and 1950s.
Collaborations and Synergies
As underlined by Anna Petta, Mayor of Baronissi, the exhibition represents a mission of the Baronissi Regional Contemporary Art Fund, aimed at opening dialogues with foundations, contemporary art collections, academies, universities and associations recognized at the regional level. This dialogue enriches the cultural and artistic debate, highlighting the multiplicity of styles and languages that characterize contemporary Cuban art.
A Long Path of Valorization
Since 2014, the Rossi Foundation has promoted 33 international projects, involving 17 Cuban artists and 8 international curators in 7 of these projects. The research and cataloguing of the “materials” obtained has been distributed over time, making transversal thematic projects necessary to best valorise the works. Massimo Bignardi, curator of the exhibition, has undertaken a path of synthesis not only to promote the authors and the works, but also to support individual artistic projects.
The Importance of Curators
Curators such as Jorge Fernandez, Dermis Leon, Raffael Diaz and Nelson Ramirez have played a crucial role in promoting contemporary Cuban art. Jorge Fernandez, in particular, has given a series of interviews also available on video, in which he shares his experience as Director of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba. The exhibition “Under the Caribbean Sky,” inaugurated last July 5, will remain open until September 29, 2024, offering a precious opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant and diverse art of the Caribbean island.
