The scam, based on a fake car accident involving a relative, was conducted in a sneaky way. Casarin received a phone call from an individual who pretended to be a soldier, warning him of an alleged accident involving his son. Worried, the former referee was induced to go urgently to San Donato Milanese to collect a phantom report. During the entire trip, the interlocutor continued to keep him busy on the phone, probably to prevent him from verifying the veracity of the story with other people.

Only after about half an hour, Casarin interrupted the conversation, suspicious. When he returned home, he discovered the bitter truth: in the meantime, someone had convinced his wife to hand over all the valuables in the house, using the same false story of the son in danger. Obviously, Casarin's son was fine and had never been involved in any accident.
The next day, August 27, Paul Casarin filed a complaint with the Carabinieri. The police immediately began an investigation and acquired the images from the video surveillance system of the former referee's house, in the hope of identifying those responsible for the fraud.
