Vomero: with September the infernal traffic returns

Aggravated by the closure of Piazza degli Artisti and the works in Via Cimarosa

Al Vomero, on this first weekend of September, with many people back on the streets after the summer break, the usual infernal chaos returns, due to vehicular traffic, with a snake of sheet metal, which forms between Piazza degli Artisti and Piazza Vanvitelli, but also along Via De Mura and Via Carelli, as well as on Via Stanzione and Via Merliani – says Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari, former president of the District -.

In the eye of the storm, once again, the current traffic system, completely unsuitable to handle the large amount of vehicles in transit. In fact, after the closure of the ZTL in via Luca Giordano and with the recent pedestrianization of a part of Piazza degli Artisti, the situation, already difficult, has clearly worsened and the consequences can be observed daily, reaching their peak on weekends.

The classic straw that broke the already flat cup's back is represented by the road surface restoration work underway on Via Cimarosa, a road that plays a significant role in traffic management with the current system, work that should have been carried out during the month of August, instead of in September when all Neapolitans returned from vacation.

”Furthermore – Capodanno points out – the maze of narrow streets, bordering an open-air market area, which starts right from Piazza degli Artisti to reach the area of ​​the Collana stadium and Via Cilea is completely insufficient to handle the significant flow of vehicles present – ​​Capodanno points out -.

The consequences are immediately visible with the congestion of via Tino di Camaino, similar to what happens in the quadrilateral between via San Gennaro ad Antignano, via Merliani and via Stanzione".

"Unfortunately - Capodanno adds - the traffic police on duty on the streets are decidedly insufficient. In fact, shopping in Vomero, especially on these beautiful summer days, attracts, especially on weekends, thousands of people, many of whom reach the neighborhood with their own cars, parking where possible, often in the second and third row, given the lack of public parking areas, further congesting the already chaotic situation, with repercussions also on environmental pollution ".

“One of two things,” proposed Capodanno. “Either we strengthen, also with a better organization of the service, the staff of the local section of the white helmets, especially on Saturdays, ensuring their constant presence in all key points, or, the preferable solution, we review the current traffic system, which has proven to be completely insufficient to resolve the traffic problems, especially due to the lack of public parking available to non-residents but also due to the closure of some fundamental junctions, such as Piazza degli Artisti, which we hope can be returned to traffic quickly, given the total failure of the partial pedestrianization.”

Regarding the difficult traffic situation in Vomero, which is set to get worse soon with the resumption of teaching activities in schools of all levels, Capodanno once again urges the immediate intervention of the competent municipal offices, starting with those reporting to the councilors for roads and traffic, Cosenza, and the municipal police, De Iesu.
