The 59-year-old, who had been diagnosed with West Nile virus encephalitis last August and was already suffering from cancer, died in the intensive care unit of Salerno hospital.
This was communicated by the Municipality of Altavilla Silentina, in the province of Salerno where the man lived, which entrusted a message of condolence to a social media post in which it is written that "Unfortunately, our fellow citizen did not make it.
In recent days his name had been included among those in Italy who had been affected by the mosquito Culex".
"However," it added, "the problem had emerged in a person already severely affected by a serious oncological disease, which, despite the meticulous care of medical staff, failed to save him from death. Our closeness and condolences to the family."
Meanwhile, in Altavilla Silentina, initial analysis had already ruled out the presence of Culex mosquitoes in August. Now, "further mosquito trapping has been carried out, conducted by the Zooprophylactic Institute and the Local Health Authority, and the result is that no Culex mosquitoes are present," the Municipality announced on social media, explaining that "the traps had been placed above San Martino, and in this area too, the results were negative."
We will proceed next week in Borgo Carillia, with the placement of new traps and new monitoring."
"The results obtained so far," the municipal administration notes, "reassure us and give us confidence, while remaining vigilant to avoid any danger. The recommendations already communicated remain in effect: avoid standing water or staying in places where there is standing water, use repellent when outdoors, and wear light-colored clothing."
