The Archaeological Park of Pompeii has published six new scientific articles in the digital journal E-Journal degli Scavi di Pompei , providing important updates on research projects and archaeological investigations conducted in 2023-2024. The publications, produced in collaboration with national and international research institutes, aim to disseminate the results of ongoing excavations, research, and restorations in real time, promoting transparency and data sharing through open access.
One of the most significant articles concerns the project conducted by the University La Sapienza of Rome, which is working on the creation of an information system to analyze and manage the archaeological heritage of Regio VII. This study aims to "reorder" the enormous amount of data collected on the urban area and to identify the contexts that made up the ancient landscape in different periods of Pompeii's history. The project combines stratigraphic analysis with a complex computer system that allows the structural elements and finds to be virtually recomposed.
Another contribution, signed by the University of Naples Federico II, focuses on the excavations in the so-called Temple of Asclepius, in insula VIII 7. The investigations have allowed us to collect crucial information not only on the dating of the temple, but also on the dynamics of occupation of the adjacent buildings. This excavation is revealing new aspects of the religious and social life of Pompeii.
The necropolis of Porta Sarno is also the subject of further study, thanks to a study conducted by the Universidad Europea de Valencia, in collaboration with other European institutes. The research focuses on the area adjacent to the funerary enclosure of Marcus Venerius Secundius, with the aim of further exploring the development of the necropolis and the funerary rituals of the ancient city.
In the field of conservation, a team from the University of Turin and the Conservation and Restoration Center “La Venaria Reale” is conducting an interdisciplinary project in the Casa della Caccia Antica. This study not only deals with reconstructing the building history of the domus, but also aims to improve the conservation conditions of the frescoes, threatened by degradation due to natural and anthropic factors.
Another study, conducted by the University of Bologna , focuses on the micro-histories of the dialectic between public and private spaces in Pompeii, with an investigation of insula I 17. This urban area, with its particular configuration and the presence of a rare arcaded peristyle, offers interesting insights into understanding the architectural evolution of the city.
Finally, a project by the University of Catania, in collaboration with the Polytechnic of Bari and the University of Molise, is bringing to light new information on the Capitolium and the northern area of the Forum. The study of the stratigraphy and ceramic finds is allowing us to review previous reconstructions, contributing to a greater understanding of the development phases of the main square of Pompeii.
