Naples. Yesterday at approximately 17:30, train 1166, which left Sorrento at 16:38, stopped after the Villa Regina stop, on the Pompei Scavi-Torre Annunziata section of the Naples-Sorrento railway line.
The Orsa union denounces in a note the aggression received by two Eav workers: “Given that this train already had, before leaving Sorrento, serious technical problems with one of the two electric trains in the composition and it left only because the official in charge of maintenance, from Naples, assured the train conductor and the engineer that, with half of the engines working, they would not have had major problems.
Obviously, on the section where there was the greatest stress for the “machine”, another engine also gave out and the convoy remained stuck in the middle of the line.
We will not recount the scenes of panic and the painful, yet another, “procession” of travelers on foot on the tracks, social media are full of them. This time, however, something much more dangerous and alarming happened that we want to report.
The train conductor and the engineer were attacked and kicked and punched by those who were getting off the train to walk away on the tracks. Only the train conductor decided to seek hospital treatment, while the engineer gave up, even though he had the worst of the two…
On September 29th we denounced, with a press release, what could happen and what happened yesterday afternoon:
Overcrowded trains, reduced to just one electric train, breakdowns, cancellations, and delays, all increase the stress on travellers, leading many commuters (and not only them) to "inappropriately vent" their frustrations on the unfortunate employees who, despite themselves, in addition to suffering the same discomfort as the passengers, must also endure daily (and even several times during a shift) the (so far only) verbal aggression of those who, unable and unwilling to use other methods, find it easier to attack and "cover up" with their "bad words" the first uniform they come across.
These unfortunate situations are multiplying beyond measure, just as the level of violence is increasing on the part of those who, albeit rightly, protest in an increasingly animated manner, raising fears for the physical safety of those workers who, operating in close contact with the public, are practically on the "front line", in every sense.
Nothing has been done, no initiative has been put in place by the company, and so to protest against what happened yesterday with that vile aggression to our colleagues, to bring to everyone's attention: citizens, EAV, media and institutions. We have proclaimed a 4-hour strike for tomorrow 23.10.2024 from 8:20 to 12:20.
Protecting workers from these situations not only safeguards their physical and mental health, but also creates a safer, more productive and respectful work environment.
Evidently the EAV managers still do not think so, despite what they stated at the conference on railway safety last week, but we know their consistency well”.
